Day 15 - 4/18/2017 - Jon Ossoff Election & Will the Waiter

The last 36 hours have been a whirlwind and I'll try and weave it together.

Jon Ossoff is running to become a Democratic Congressman from Georgia's 6th District.
Will the Waiter works at Canoe, an upscale fine dining restaurant, with EXCELLENT food..

Will the Waiter is a graduate of the University of Georgia, with a degree in Philosophy.
Jon Ossoff is a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service.

Jon Ossoff has a graduate degree from the London School of Economics.
Will the Waiter is returning to get a graduate degree in Computer Programming.

Will the Waiter's favorite philosopher is Aldous Huxley, not the dystopian "Brave New World", but the hopeful "The Island", which I now have to read.

Jon Ossoff specializes in trade relations between the United States and China, and worked as a National Security staffer in the United States Congress.

Both men are involved in providing public service to the people they meet, day in and day out, with warmth, humor and attentiveness.

There is not much difference between these two people and their dedication to be the best that they can be. Vickie and I have spent some quality time here in Atlanta to help Jon win, but I have to tell you that I have never met a more practiced, attentive, waiter with exceptional helpfulness and an engaging personality than Will at any restaurant in the world.

Last night's decision goes to Will.
Tonight's election decision will go to Jon. (Pssst! keep an eye out for Will.)

So by now you probably know that my lovely wife is now on her way to be an international celebrity. Yeah, I know that giving away a pie a day for 365 days already put her pretty high up the admiration list.

But yesterday she was interviewed by VICE News, Danish TV, and Reuters. When I checked the web last night:

- Reuters was running an overview of the Ossoff race and did an on-camera interview with Vickie, where Vickie said "I want to send a message to Trump."
- On her Danish TV interview she told them "I want my country back."
- The Washington Post published a campaign discussion, where the opening feature photograph was Jon Ossoff and Vickie.
- Later, the Washington Post did an update of the story and the feature video was the Reuters video story, with a tag ID that said, Vickie Hardin Woods, Salem Oregon.

And we spent the rest of today knocking on doors of identified Democrats who hadn't voted yet to get the to the polls. OK, truth is Vickie knocked and I drove.

It's almost 6pm and we are having drinks and doing laundry. Now THAT's a vacation!

Tomorrow morning, off to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

We're home. Eastward Journey The trip odometer tells us that we covered 8,404 miles in our little excursion. Across and back. One small rock chip on the windshield, patched in Atlanta. Day 22 & 23 - Charleston WV to St. Louis, MO to Norfolk, NB - 1,441 Miles

I have not much to say about these days, and a few pictures, but here goes. We spent the night in Charleston, WV getting in late. Biggest think I can relate is being approached by a young woman in the hotel parking, looking for some money because she saw we were from out of town. It would have been one thing, but she had been in a car following us through town as I made a couple of wrong turns. Too much of a set-up. It has been lots of freeway driving. All states have been consistently pretty including West Virginia, and Kentucky, where we stopped for lunch in Lexington. The place was called Bourbon+Toulouse, and it was a New Orleans style beans and rice and Etouffee place we found on Yelp. Basically like a hippie throwback joint, and it was great. Paper plates, two half orders, beer and soda with tip $15 bucks. I'd go back. We went to St. Louis, and set the navi to take us to the Arch. Day 27 - 4/30/2017 - Helena, MT to Walla Walla, WA - 463.8 Miles

Sunday Afternoon in Idaho We had a great night last night with Vickie's old friends in Helena. It was much like last month when I met up with my old roommates Craig and Brad. Over 30 years, but it was also like we just saw each other yesterday. Real frienship endures all things. Time is inconsequential. We headed through Missoula to the Mountains of Idaho; the Lochsa and Selway rivers merging into the Clearwater. We stopped several times to see the rafters and Vickie got these shots. Retirement means you don't have to care about schedules. We picked up Linda Norris in Helena, so for these last few days we are the Three Musketeers. All for one, and one for wine. Driving through these mountains smelled of home, and long ago. One of the best adventures of my life was in 1978 when I spent 6 days on the Snake River in a dory exploring Hells Canyon, from the bottom.
